Winter cycling sessions

Want to continue cycling over the winter but need a bit of support? Then join Cycling with Anne on a winter cycling session designed to give you the confidence to get out on your bike all year round.

Cycling With Anne and HiTrans are pleased to announce that we are running some Winter Cycling events on Orkney aimed at supporting people keen to keep cycling in winter. Each session will run with a small group of up to six people throughout the winter and details of new sessions will be added as they are scheduled.

The sessions are aimed at people who use their bike to access services in their local area (rather than longer distance leisure cyclists). The sessions will start off-road and then we will go for a short cycle ride around the town to gain confidence with what we have learnt. Some freebies to support winter cycling will also be available!

Next sessions are:

Stromness: Tuesday 4th February

Kirkwall: Tuesday 11th February

Times and locations in the booking form below.

How to book

Use this form to book a session or register interest for future sessions. The form will ask you to tell us about your current level of cycling so that we can make sure that the session meets your needs.

What to wear

Check out this great advice from Sustrans – 11 tips for winter cycling. Wear warm socks and waterproof shoes, (waterproof) gloves, hat and a waterproof coat. Several thin layers of clothing may work better than one thick layer.

Be seen by adding a layer of bright, light or reflective clothing. Accessories such as reflective strips or stickers on bags and panniers can be great additions too.

Getting your bike ready

Having a decent set of bike lights when you are cycling on the road is a legal requirement. It is worth checking your bike over before you plan to use it – at the very least do an ABC check: A – check that there is enough air in your tyres and pump them up if not. B – make sure your brakes work by rolling your bike forward and applying the front brake, and then rolling it back and applying the back brake. C is for chain – make sure it is not rusted and you can change through your gears. C is also for control – ensuring the front stem of the bike – where the handlebars – does not move independently of the rest of your bike.

Where to meet

We will meet at either Stromness Academy or Kirkwall Grammar School. Precise details will be provided here before the session starts but please get in touch if you need further details.

Cancellation policy

We will of course be checking the weather ahead of the session. We will postpone the session if heavy winds, rain, snow, ice etc are forecast and will confirm on the morning of the session whether the session is going ahead. You can check back here or on the Cycling With Anne Facebook or by getting in touch directly.
